About Lafayette, Colorado

If the pioneers of Lafayette could return today, they might not recognize this growing city. It was once a small coal mining town that sprouted up during the late 1800s, when Mary Elizabeth Miller and her husband Lafayette, first mined the land. In 1868, the couple bought a 240-acre farm, and dug two mine shafts that produced 1,000 tons of coal a day. When the town was formed in 1890, it was the largest coal-mining center in Boulder County.
