Colorado ranked a respectable fifth in WalletHub’s analysis on states with the most fun, but locals would say endless recreational opportunities make Colorado tops year-round.
Coloradoans have our own robust definition of fun. Inspired by the mountains and plenty of sunshine throughout the year, residents enjoy an exceptional outdoor lifestyle and recreation.
All of that outdoor adventure makes us hungry for top-notch food and craft beer enjoyed on rooftop patios to keep the outdoor vibe going.
“There are certain states where fun is not just an option, but also a way of life,” writes WalletHub in their report on the top states for fun. And that is the case in Colorado.
Take for example the many gorgeous hikes close to our major metro areas. During these mid-summer months, colorful wildflowers dot vistas that never end. Some favorite Boulder County wildflower hikes include Devils Thumb Lake, Gregory Canyon, and Mount Sanitas. And don’t forget, Crested Butte is the wildflower capital of the state.
Of course, Colorado fun is punctuated by access to great skiing. Colorado took the No. 2 ranking for skiing facilities per capita, following top-rated Vermont, according to WalletHub.

To come up with its ranking, WalletHub compared the 50 states across 26 key indicators “of a jolly good time that won’t break the bank,” ranging from movie costs to accessibility of national parks to restaurants, casinos, performing arts theaters, and fitness centers per capita. The states were compared across two key categories, “Entertainment & Recreation” and “Nightlife.”
